The Eighth Annual Sr. Sheila Basketball Tournament wrapped up on January 15 with the boys varsity championship. Our boys from St.Mary’s fell short to a hot-shooting Nativity of Orchard Park team by 49-19. They simply ran into a team clicking on all cylinders, and had no answers to stellar 3 point shooting by Eric Geisler and superior inside/outside play by tourney MVP Colin Herzog of Nativity. Both players tallied 17 points in the final game as Nativity, using 6 of 9 shooting from 3 point range, was a well-deserving champion.

St. Mary’s had reached the final with an inspired win against defending champion DeSales by a 30-25 score in a tightly contested battle, in what would prove to be the most entertaining game of the entire tourney.Tyler Braun pumped in 15 points in leading the victory. Nativity opened up by outgunning St.John Vianney by a 39-26 margin, where Herzog once again showed his smooth skills and Nativity flashed their impressive perimeter shooting. That led to a consolation game matchup between DeSales and St. John Vianney, won by a 34-26 score in another entertaining game.

In addition to Herzog being named MVP, the all-tourney team featured Geisler of Nativity, Tom Bestpitch of St. John Vianney, Henry Smith of DeSales, and St. Mary’s Tyler Braun and Matt White. Congratulations to all.

Earlier games in the tourney showcased games at the JV level, with two divisions of girls teams and one division of boys teams. Our spirited Bees came up short in their games but showed a lot of hustle and a never-say-die attitude which will bode well for them in future games.

Schools represented at the JV level in addition to our own St.Mary’s boys and girls teams included Saints Peter and Paul of Williamsville (JV girls), St.Christopher (JV girls), St.Amelia (2 JV girls teams, and JV boys), St.Mark (JV girls), St. John Vianney (JV girls and boys), St.Mary of Lancaster (JV boys), and Orchard Park’s Nativity of Our Lady (JV girls). Division championship results were as follows:

JV Girls (East Division)- Nativity 23, Sts. Peter & Paul 14

JV Girls (West Division)- St.Mark 10, St.Amelia(Black team) 5

JV Boys – St.Mary(Lancaster) 40, St.Amelia 21

Kudos to all teams who participated , and head coaches Ed Girzone (Varsity boys), Jason Knobloch (JV boys), and Tom Romano (JV girls) and their assistants in leading their teams and their continued dedication. We appreciate all who supported the tourney including all volunteers, most notably Mrs. Andrea Pohle and Mrs. Christine White who coordinated the efforts of the 8th graders in selling refreshments,  Mrs. Stephanie States who did a lot of work behind the scenes and Mrs. Emily Horan and Mr. Jim Reister. 8th Grade advisors.  An extra tip of the hat goes to Athletic Director Ms.Kristina Young and Basketball Chair Tom Romano for their efforts in heading up the tourney. All can be proud of our wonderful tournament and hope it continues on for many years. Sr. Sheila would indeed be proud.
