Christina Egleston, Director of Catholic Education and Michael Slish, Youth Minister & Confirmation Coordinator, gave presentations today to SMS students in grades 2-8 on the significance of our Catholic faith's roots in Judaism, and the tie-ins between Holy Thursday, the Last Supper, and the traditional Seder Meal .
With the aid of the use of "plague puppets", matzah, the Old Tesament, and video resources, they told the story of Exodus, when God freed the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. Students learned the various parts and order of the Seder Meal, and what each food or drink signifies as part of Passover. They also took part in a visual representation of the plagues that God sent to Egypt, and learned how in our own lives, sometimes it takes experiencing hardship before we are willing to comply with what God is asking us to do.
They also learned about various Jewish traditions surrounding the Seder and Passover, and how they might differ from family to family. One example of this which they enjoyed participating in was hiding the afikomen, or piece of matzah, and children receiving a prize when they find it!
Students learned how there are parallels between Exodus and Easter. Just as the blood of the Paschal lamb saved the Israelites from death, so does Jesus' sacrifice on the cross save humanity from sin and death.
Thank you Mrs. Egleston and Mr. Slish for a very impactful and fun lesson!
