Students are keeping the learning & fun going this summer at St. Mary School's Montessori Summer Adventure & STREAM Camps!
Rising 3rd - 6th graders completed the second week of STREAM (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Art & Math) Summer Camps this week with Mrs. Bishop, Mrs. Genovese, Mrs. Leong, & Mrs. Wojtaszek. Each week of camp focuses on a central theme and incorporates the main principles of STREAM. Students participated in various hands-on activities that promote communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity.
Some of the highlights of STREAM camp for students this summer include:
Tropical Adventure Week (click here for photos)
Virtual field trip to the rainforest

Our youngest students are also getting in on the fun! In many cases these campers are getting a preview of their new school for the fall with Montessori Summer Adventure Camps with Miss Krista and Miss Lauren. Rising Pre-K - grade 3 students are attending one or more of three exciting sessions including Nature & Insects (click here for photos), Under the Sea (click here for photos), and Water Adventures! Campers have had access to fun & creative Montessori activities, snack, and time outside each day.
The goal of Montessori education is to foster a child’s natural inclination to learn. Montessori teachers guide rather than instruct, linking each student with activities that meet his interests, needs, and developmental level. The classroom is designed to allow movement and collaboration while promoting concentration and a sense of order. Unique learning materials beckon from accessible shelves, inviting small hands to take on new challenges, one concept or skill at a time. Montessori education offers our children opportunities to develop their potential, setting the foundation for becoming engaged, competent, responsible, and respectful individuals with an understanding and appreciation that learning is for life!
Camps like those offered at SMS over the summer offer parents additional child care options, as well as a solution to a concerning phenomenon known as "the summer slide". The summer slide is the tendency for students to lose academic skills and knowledge over the extended summer break when they are not engaged in regular educational activities. Research has shown that students can lose up to two months of grade-level equivalency in math and reading skills over the summer. This can have a significant impact on students’ academic performance and long-term success. Educational camps assure that children stay engaged, active, and learning throughout the summer break, and have the opportunity to explore new concepts, develop critical thinking skills, and unleash their creativity in a supportive environment.
