This week we're shining a light on our Montessori Children's House once again, and it's wonderful staff members! "Miss Katie" as her students call her, is one of our Montessori teachers, along with Miss Krista, and Miss Paige, our Montessori Children's House Aide. Let's get to know her...
Name: Katie Smith
Grades you teach at SMS: I teach in the Montessori Children's House, which includes children ages 3-6 in Montessori Pre-K half day and full day programs, as well as full day Montessori Kindergarten.
Experience: I obtained my Bachelor’s degree from Buffalo State in Educational Human Services, with concentrations in Education, Sociology, and Psychology. I worked as a teacher assistant at a daycare before returning to school for my Master's Degree. I obtained my Master's Degree from Medaille College in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. After graduating I worked as a mental health counselor for children and adolescents, but I took a step back from counseling when I found out I was expecting my son. I started working as a lead Pre-K teacher at a daycare, then became the director of the daycare. Now I have happily found my place at SMS!
Spouse/children/pets: I have an amazing 2 year old son with my boyfriend of 10 years.
Hobbies/talents: I love being outdoors with my family doing things like camping, fishing, and riding ATVs. I also enjoy photography, and mostly take pictures of nature during all seasons out at our beautiful family property. (Fall is my favorite!) I have also always loved art, doing arts and crafts with my son is one of my favorite things!
Favorite foods: Pasta, French fries
Something you always tell your students: “There is hope even when your brain tells you otherwise”
