Our recently graduated 8th graders made so many exciting memories during their class trip in May, that we're just now catching up on all the great photos! From the (infamous) bus breakdown, to mini-golf, the Liberty Bell, meeting Gov. Shapiro, Independence Hall, the Museum of Illusions, & Old St. Joseph's National Shrine, this was an adventure we're sure our newest SMS alumni won't soon forget!

Over the next several weeks we'll be highlighting members of our 8th grade graduating class of 2026. Before they could graduate though, each 8th grader worked for months completing their Capstone Project.
8th Grade Capstone Projects are multifaceted, culminating academic experiences that serve as the final, integrative piece of our students' educational program. 8th graders design & build a Google site themselves to communicate how St. Mary School has formed them academically, socially & spiritually into the young men & women they are today. Students then have to present their website to a panel of teachers, staff, or other community leaders, & answer questions on their presentation.
Creating a Google site teaches students practical digital literacy, project management, & creative communication. It helps them learn how to organize information logically, collaborate effectively, & curate a professional digital presence. The presentation portion of the Capstone Project teaches students essential skills far beyond standing at a podium. It builds self-confidence, improves verbal & written clarity, sharpens critical thinking, & develops leadership & interpersonal abilities.
We'd like to congratulate all of our 8th graders on the completion of their capstone projects. Margaret MacDiarmid & Henry Sendlak each won a Knights of Columbus $500 scholarship that was presented at graduation for the highest scorning male & female students on this year's Capstone Projects. Congratulations!

🙏 Heavenly Father, you entrusted your Son Jesus, the child of Mary, to the care of Joseph, his foster father. Bless all fathers & grandfathers as they care for their families. Give them strength & wisdom, tenderness & patience, give them ability to love in a way that reflects your love. Support them in the work they have to do, protecting those who look to them, as we look to you for love & salvation. Help us to love them in a way that would bring honor to You & them. Amen.

From the start of the game to the final whistle, every player supported & encouraged one another. Whether it was scoring a goal, making a great pass, hustling back on defense, or simply cheering on a teammate from the sideline, everyone played an important role. Congrats Bees!

The 8th graders on the class trip started their day at the US Mint, followed by Reading Market, a quick stop at Washington square guided by Mr. Washo, Mass at St. Joseph Church which was founded in 1733 by the Jesuits, and time at the Franklin Institute. Tonight they have dinner at Dave & Buster's, go to the museum of illusions, and a twilight visit to the Chinese Lantern Festival.

🍦 Yesterday was National Chocolate Ice Cream Day, & our grade 3 enrichment students put the cherry on top of their latest project by making & eating homemade ice cream!
Mrs. Larson's students learned all about what it takes to start the sweet business of making ice cream. They began by writing business letters to "Mr. Scoops" to ask for a budget & permission to franchise his successful ice cream truck enterprise. Once they had their budgets & permission, they got to work designing their new ice cream trucks. Next, they completed surveys amongst their target audience to learn what the most popular flavors might be, & learned about the science behind how ice cream is made. They ended their cross-curricular crusade by shaking up some homemade ice cream with ice & salt, & enjoying it with plenty of sprinkles!
