Grade 2 is celebrating Black History Month this February by learning about and honoring the essential contributions of Black Americans to history and society. Each student shared facts they learned about important Black Americans, the biographies included Jackie Robinson, Ruby Bridges, Frederick Douglas, Rosa Parks, Sojourner Truth, Martin Luther King Jr., Barack Obama, & Harriett Tubman!
🐄🥛 Our Montessori Pre-K- through grade 2 students had fun before February Break watching the Milk for Health Magician, Rob Allen! His nutrition and dairy focused magic show is always a hit among crowds of all ages.
SMS graduates just keep achieving great things, in high school & beyond! Congratulations to the St. Mary School Swormville Alumnae who have been named to the second quarter honor roll at Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart, Mount St. Mary Academy, & Canisius High School!
⛸️ Although we've said "arrivederci" to the Winter Olympics, our students are still achieving #Buzzworthy feats! SMS students Fionna O. & Lydia M. both had the opportunity to not only compete in the Empire State Games held in Lake Placid in early Feb., but they also held the torch when it made it's way through Buffalo prior to the games!
Fionna competed at her 2nd winter games this year, & loved all the extra activities that came with the competition & Lake Placid area, including dog sledding! Fionna plans to continue to work & grow in skating & hopefully be back at it again next year.
Lydia had a beautiful program against some great skaters this year & finished 4th in her group. Competition season rolls on for Lydia with Rochester, Cheektowaga & Pittsburgh in the months ahead. Her program this year features axels, so she’s excited to master those!
❤️🍦 Grade 2 had so much fun “shaking it up" for Valentine's Day! Mrs. Wojtaszek's class has the wonderful tradition of making homemade ice cream each year for their Valentines Day class party. Students learn about the science behind the recipe, & get to enjoy a sweet treat after they're "all shook up". Thank you to everyone who supplied the class with their ingredients!
One of our SMS #OlympicGames that students took part in before Feb. break involved our 7th & 1st graders teaming up to try to "speed skate" around the gym on pieces of paper. It's harder than it looks, but a lot of fun!

🇺🇸 While you might be waking early this am to cheer on the US Mens' Hockey team, check out some of our own SMS Olympic competitions held during #Spiritweek. From our Parade of Nations, Olympic themed artwork & door decorating contest, "Where in the world is Mrs. D'Angelo", & Olympic trivia, to "Medal Day" on which students dressed in gold, silver or bronze, & our Faith Family Olympics, our students learned the value (and fun!) of a little healthy competition.
During Catholic Schools Week at the end of January, we celebrated our weekly School Mass with a Mixed Faith Family Choir, Virtue Awards for Fidelity, & the Knights of Columbus Poster & Essay Contest Winners! Congratulations to all of our fabulous students who were recognized for their achievements, & thank you to the Knights for their generous contributions to our school!
It's another #throwbackthursday - Kindergarten style! Miss Gon's Kindergarten cuties colored some beautiful bees during Catholic Schools Week, then delivered them to the mailboxes of SMS teachers & staff. What a nice way to show appreciation for all that our hardworking staff does each & every day!

🎠 Last week our 2nd & 3rd graders had a wonderful time on their field trip to the Herschell Carousel Factory Museum. They learned about the rich history of the carousel, and even designed a crank shaft with a horse!
We honored our 8th grade Varsity Boys Basketball players last Monday night after their last home game of the season. Our 8th grade players are pictured with roses, please also enjoy some other photos from the boys' season!
Spirit Week just isn't Spirit Week without the 8th grade relay races!. Faith Families cheered for their favorite team member in this tight race that switched leaders a few times. Was there a winning team? Yes. Did it matter who won? No. We all had a blast and just enjoyed having fun!

Students in grades 4-8 recently participated in our SMS Career Fair. We welcomed over 20 guests, including school parents and even some alumni! Fr. Tom opened the event with a prayer and talk on vocations. Students enjoyed meeting with our guests and learning about various careers, including architecture, banking, law, the food industry, speech therapy, education, advertising, criminal investigation, and more!
🐢 Our Montessori Pre-K students are really loving their new class pet - Bennett the turtle! Students voted on a name for their new pet before he arrived, & now that he's here they have new work to go along with him. There are interesting facts about Bennett's species posted above his enclosure so that friends can learn more about him. Additionally, students may work on an observation sheet that records whether Bennett is eating, sleeping, walking, or hiding!
